Maps are geographical and political representations of the world that are linked to the past. Borders breach the topography of the (cultural) landscape and separate us from the others. How much has the world changed over the past hundred years? As a result of national and international agreements, conflicts, and revolutions, political borders were repeatedly redrawn and transcended, merging as the world moved closer together, and being re-established along with new fears and threats. Newly created conspiracy theories take us back to believing in a flat earth, undermine our confidence in the world and might influence the direct actions without realized it. At the same time, our world has turned digital, and physical experiences have been replaced by virtual ones. Consequently, the representation of the contemporary world is envisioned as data topographies.
The exhibited artworks are the result of the thematic workshop with the students of Akademia Sztuk Pięknych Katowice. The works based on political and geographical maps reflect in different media, from collage to object and video, on mental, physical and virtual topography, individual and collective memories, geopolitical disruptions and hazard future visions. //
Mapy sú geografickou a politickou reprezentáciou sveta napojenou na minulosť. Hranice narušujú topografiu (kultúrnej) krajiny a oddeľujú nás od ostatných. Ako veľmi sa zmenil svet za posledných sto rokov? Na základe národných a medzinárodných dohôd, v dôsledku konfliktov a revolúcií, sa politické hranice opakovane prekresľovali a prekračovali, spájali sa a znovu vytyčovali ako výsledok nových obáv a hrozieb. Novovytvorené konšpiračné teórie nás vracajú k viere v plochú Zem, podkopávajú našu dôveru vo svet a môžu ovplyvňovať priame činy bez toho, aby sme si to uvedomovali. Zároveň sa náš svet zmenil na digitálny a fyzické zážitky boli nahradené virtuálnymi. Dátové topografie sa stali novou reprezentáciou sveta.
Vystavené diela sú výsledkom tematického workshopu so študentmi Akadémie Sztuk Pięknych v Katowiciach. Diela založené na politických a geografických mapách reflektujú v rôznych médiách, od koláže po objekt a video, mentálnu, fyzickú a virtuálnu topografiu, individuálne a kolektívne spomienky, geopolitické narušenia a riskantné vízie budúcnosti.
